It is devastating, arguably on a totally vain level, when you’re a grown woman and your face breaks out like a teenager. I’m not talking “Oh I have a little something here..” I’m talking “holy cow there is a basketball protruding from my chin. It hurts to smile.” Painful, cystic acne. The kind that doesn’t like to go anywhere for months sometimes. I’ve talked about what’s worked for my face in the past, here and here, but as I age and have children, my skin changes. Currently, I have the absolute best routine I’ve ever had and I wanted to share it with you. Especially those of you who are looking in the mirror each morning and just want to cry because you feel totally hopeless against it all. If you’ve never experienced cystic acne, and the resulting scars, you may think I’m being a bit dramatic. If you have, I wish I could give you a big hug! It freaking sucks. So, here goes..
How I Finally Cleared My Acne
I cleanse my face with either purity by philosophy or Cerave facial cleanser and a wash cloth. I’ve discontinued use of my clarisonic, but only because I wanted to eliminate any possible spreading of my acne when it was at it’s worst. Now that my skin is clear again, I will be adding it back into my routine. You can purchase Cerave at any drugstore, or here at Amazon (prime with free shipping!) for only $10.
Apply SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF serum. This stuff is crazy expensive, but it is the number one thing that helped me start seeing a change in the texture of my skin. It doesn’t say it clears up acne, but I stopped breaking out and saw a difference in the texture of my skin after just a few days of using this. In three months of use I’ve seen my worst scars lighten at the very least 60%. I’ve never spent this much on a beauty product, but I will be repurchasing it when the bottle runs out. I’ve been using phloretin cf for three months now and am not even halfway through the bottle, so it definitely lasts a long time. I paid over $150 for this at the skin spa, but found it for $112 at Amazon, here.
Once the Phloretin CF dries, I apply Skinceuticals Daily Moisture pore minimizing moisturizer. Holy cow I love this stuff. It is the holy grail for semi oily skinned folks like myself. Moisturizing is such an important, if not the most important beyond sunscreen, thing you can do for your skin. This stuff is amazing. It definitely minimizes my pores and it intensely moisturizes without leaving your face looking like an oil slick. Love, love, love.
After moisturizing, I apply sunscreen. For, like, the first time in my life. I’ve started using sunscreen. I went to the skin spa and had one of those scary “see the damage you’ve done to your skin” tests done with that big scary face machine and am now slathering my entire body in sunscreen every day. Not really, just my face, and only when I remember, but I feel seriously panicky when I forget now. When you’ve had as much acne as I’ve had, you’re left with quite a few scars. You don’t want those scars getting any darker, and using that fabulously expensive phloretin would be useless without sunscreen, so you see why… I have ALWAYS stayed away from sunscreen in my moisturizers because they have ALWAYS broken me out. And that crap stings if it gets anywhere near your eyes. But this Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense has yet to break me out in three months of use. I love it. And it’s tinted, so that’s nice 🙂
Phew, that seems like a lot but it takes about 60 seconds.
Then I apply Glo Therapeutics Renew Serum, which moisturizes AND clears acne in one step. So simple, so amazing. It has worked wonders as well.
All of these things combined have given me my clearest skin ever. It’s such a wonderful feeling! I’m happy to answer any questions if you have them, and please reference my past posts if you’re looking for something different.
The product links above are the most inexpensive I found all of these products, from amazon so if you have prime it’s free shipping, and the sellers had the most good reviews. Woo Hoo!
