Growing up my siblings and I were obsessed with Garth Brooks. Heretofore referred to as “The Garth” because he is a separate entity all his own in our minds. I would sit for hours playing Garth tapes over and over again on my boom box. When I was in 3rd grade my Aunt Melinda (Ninna) called my Sister and I to tell us she was taking us somewhere that night but it was a surprise. We were so excited we didn’t know what to do with ourselves. We got dressed in our favorite matching American Flag t-shirts with denim fringe, ponytail with massive hairbow, and loafers (thanks mom…) and headed to Dallas to meet her for our surprise. When we pulled up to Reunion Arena we still had no clue what we were doing until Ninna handed us each a ticket to the Garth concert for that evening. Ahhhhhhhhh! 3rd ROW right behind the stage nonetheless! At Garth concerts behind the stage is where it’s at. He emerged from the middle of the stage. That night was magical. Garth swung from a ladder and pointed right at us and winked. We were done, for life. Die hard fans turned into borderline stalkers 😉
Every time Garth came in town we made it an event, and the entire family started going too. I’ll never forget my little brother all zonked out at Texas Stadium waiting for Garth to come on in 1993/94? That night amped up our love even more, and set the bar incredibly high for any other concerts we attended. He “flew”, set the stage on fire and he made it rain. In Texas Stadium. Not like rapper “make it rain”, actual freaking rain. Magical.
Over the years my Aunt would take me to all kinds of country concerts. I am not exaggerating in the least when I say “name it, I’ve seen ’em”. Reba, Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, John Michael Montgomery, Clay Walker, Martina McBride, Toby Keith, The Judds being among the most memorable. As well as many concerts at Billy Bobs. One night at Billy Bobs we saw Rhett Akins. I had a huge little girl crush on him and the autograph line was wrapped around the building after the show. With a little encouragement from Ninna, I wiggled my way past security and said “I have to get up really early for school tomorrow, would you please sign my picture?” Totes got his autograph. And a lot of dirty looks from older women in rockies 😉
In my adult life I’ve expanded my love of concerts to include all genres, but nothing compares to The Garth. Nothing. This past weekend my family and I attended the Tornado Relief Concert in Oklahoma and Garth was there.
