I’ve received quite a few emails here lately asking about the keys to successful blogging. I’d like to answer those emails with a big fat, “ummm I don’t know” 🙂 After thinking about the blogs I enjoy reading, and why I enjoy reading them, I discovered the following.
A good blog is one that is written because the person really enjoys writing and has a passion for their subject matter. If you’re passionate about something, lets say donuts, and all you write about is donuts but it’s you’re most favorite thing in the world, you have a greater chance of success than you would if you were simply blogging to try and make money. You can also have the most beautifully designed blog in the world and it won’t matter if your content is lacking. On the other end of the spectrum are those not so great looking blogs that have a zillion followers because their content is so great. Also, I overuse commas, and often, incorrecty,. And I’m the creator of the extremely long run-on sentence. <-- Ya learn something new every day 😉
Lets take for instance, The Pioneer Woman. Homegirl could write about anything and everything because she has a gift. She’s an amazing (published even, now) author. She also has that self deprecating humor thing down 🙂
Bakerella, she’s passionate about baking & making cute things. Her blog is eye candy. Even though at times she makes her little treats seem a heck of a lot easier to make than they are and I end up feeling inferior about my baking skills…
The Krazy Koupon Lady (as seen on TLC) She is both great at blogging and very knowledgeable on the subject of which she blogs.
So there you have it folks, blog because you like to blog and you love what you’re blogging about. I hate to try and simplify it, but really I don’t because it should be that simple.
I’ll write more about blogging from a web designer’s perspective in the future, that’s a whole ‘nother ballgame 🙂
