This past summer my Husband deployed and I decided to take the time to drop some LB’s and tone up a bit. Well, hopefully, a lot by the time he comes home, but it’s a work in progress. I am in fact eating a fun size butterfinger as I type this… Hey, they’re only 100 calories! If you eat just one it’s not too terribly bad, right? Anyway, I’ve done a lot of hunting at the grocery store lately for anything and everything to help me cut down on my daily caloric intake while maintaining my energy level and sanity along the way, here’s what I’ve found…
Ranch Rice Cakes – Quaker Quakes Rice Snacks
These aren’t just a snack with me, they’re an obsession. I’m a Texas girl and we love our Ranch dressing down here, throw some ranch flavor on a rice cake and I’m a happy gal. Most likely absolutely zero nutritional value, but I like ’em. A serving size is 10 of those bad boys and they’re only 70 calories per serving.
Wheat Thins & Garden Vegetable Cream Cheese Dip
This is my go to snack when I’m in between lunch and dinner and feeling like I’m running on empty. One serving of each (reduced fat) version of these products and I stay under 100 calories and feel satisfied.
Fun Size Butterfinger (and most other fun size candies)
Laughing Cow Garlic Herb Cheese
Triscuit Thin Crisps Quattro Formaggio
Nature Valley Granola Thins – Peanut Butter
90 calories per square
I love peanut butter so these were right up my alley. They make them in chocolate as well. This is, once again, all about portion control. They aren’t exactly healthy but they’re the right size and delicious for on the go treats.
Slim Fast Shake
I’m not huge on these things, but if you know you’re going to have a busy day ahead of you and think you won’t have a chance to stop for a healthy lunch they’re a better choice than a cheeseburger. Maybe keep one on ice in your car just in case ya need it.
Slap some 35 calorie laughing cow cheese on this puppy in the morning and you’ve got a super quick low calorie breakfast. Be sure and mix in some protein for breakfast as well, you know, for energy and stuff. All carbs doesn’t work so hot for me, I tend to get light headed. see: hahy-poh-glahy-see-mee-uh
90 calories per 1oz.
We’ve been eating this stuff since we were kids and it’s the only kind of beef jerky I’ll eat anymore. It’s delicious and a great source of on the go protein. It’s not diet food, but if you haven’t tried it you should probably go ahead and order it now so your love of beef jerky can begin. They offer a 10% discount on orders being shipped to an APO as a thank you to our Troops overseas.
A little note:
I’ve been shooting for around 1200 calories per day, I stuck to this for about a month solid and lost 12 pounds. I’ve since had a few slip ups and plateaued but am back on the low-cal train tomorrow morning. I’ve noticed I lose a little extra when I mix in some exercise 3-5 days each week. After having done this for a month I realized that my portions were out of control and I actually am not able to eat the amount of food I did a month ago without a stomach ache. Weird, and exciting?! Feel free to add your favorite low calorie snacks in a comment, I’m always looking for new ideas to keep things interesting 🙂
Disclaimer: I’m not saying these are the healthiest snacks on the planet, but they are low in calories and pretty darn delicious 🙂 It’s probably a good idea to mix in some green vegetables and protein as well 😉
